EU creates tribunal to investigate Russia's crimes against Ukraine
A special tribunal is being established in the European Union to address the aggression crimes of Russia against Ukraine. According to the Council of Europe's statement, the tribunal will have the authority to hold Russian political and military leaders accountable.
President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen stated that Russia must be held accountable for its aggression and must pay compensation. Secretary General of the Council of Europe Alena Berse described the establishment of the special tribunal as a significant step and welcomed this progress.
The core group creating the special tribunal has already begun preparations for its operation. Over 40 countries are actively working on plans to hold Russia accountable for its aggression crimes. Ukraine and the European Union support this process and leverage the Council of Europe's expertise in human rights protection and rule of law.
The establishment of a special tribunal is an important step in holding Russia accountable for its aggressive war against Ukraine. It demonstrates that crimes of aggression do not go unpunished.
