NYT: Are NATO countries ready for new Trump demands on defense spending.
Most NATO countries have achieved the goal of spending 2% of GDP on defense by 2024. Poland set a record, allocating 4% of GDP to defense. Germany, France, and the United Kingdom have also reached or exceeded this figure.
Former U.S. President Donald Trump stated that NATO countries should spend 5% of GDP on defense, doubling the current figure and significantly more than the United States spends itself.
German Minister of Economy Robert Habeck proposed increasing military spending to 3.5% of GDP, arguing that almost twice as much money needs to be allocated to defense to deter Russia from possible aggression.
Experts note that even with increased spending, a significant portion of this money goes to compensating for losses after the end of the Cold War and the growth of the arsenal of weapons supplied to Ukraine.
In comparison, Russia spends 6.3% of GDP on military needs.
