The company McCormick is working on reformulating products to eliminate certain ingredients, such as colorants, which were considered by Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and some American food regulators as part of efforts to make America healthier.
McCormick's CEO Brendan Foley spoke about this activity during a profit report on Tuesday.
'We are noticing an increase in reformulation activity,' Foley said, 'regarding colorants and sodium, which, by the way, we have always been working on.'
Foley added that such activity is observed 'among our consumers as well as in many new products.'
NUTRITIONISTS RESPOND TO THE BAN ON RED DYE IN FOOD: 'THIS HAS BEEN DONE WAY TOO LONG'
McCormick produces and supplies spices, seasoning blends, sauces, and other flavorings for consumers and businesses. However, Foley noted that few of their offerings use colorants.
Product reformulation is happening in the context of the movement 'Make America Healthy Again' (MAHA), which is gaining momentum across the country. Its goals include creating a nutritionist movement aimed at improving nutrition, removing toxins, preserving natural habitats, and combating the epidemic of chronic diseases in the country, as stated on their website.
Earlier this month, Kennedy instructed officials at the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to consider possible changes to its standards for 'Substances Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS),' which apply to the classification of substances subject to regulatory action that are added to food. Kennedy has long advocated for food safety and stated that as secretary of health, he wants to promote 'radical transparency' on this issue.
FDA BANS ARTIFICIAL RED DYE: WHAT THIS MEANS FOR CONSUMERS
'We want to remove colorants from food,' Kennedy said in an interview with Fox News at the end of this month.
Some states, such as California, ban certain colorants in schools, while Virginia has signed a law banning seven different artificial colorants and two additional preservatives used in food products sold in the state in the coming years.

This issue is not only a Republican one. In January, under the previous administration of President Joe Biden, the FDA revoked its approval for the use of Red Dye No. 3 under consumer pressure.
