The Russian army has upgraded its Iskander-M ballistic missiles
According to Yuri Ihnat, head of the communication department of the Air Force Command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the Russian army has modernized its Iskander-M missiles, which could make Patriot systems less effective. Specifically, the missiles now attack on a ballistic trajectory and release radar decoys before reaching their target, complicating their interception.
Moreover, the ballistic missiles maneuver instead of flying on a straight trajectory, making it difficult to predict their interception point by Patriot systems. However, Ihnat noted that these factors only make the operation of air defense systems more complicated, but not impossible.
On the night of May 24, Russia attacked Ukraine, launching 14 Iskander-M/KN-23 ballistic missiles from various areas. In total, air defense systems managed to shoot down six missiles and destroy 245 enemy drones, protecting Kyiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Odesa, and Zaporizhia regions.
