A Su-34 aircraft crashed in the Nizhny Novgorod region of Russia during a training flight, but both pilots survived. According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, there was a landing gear issue during landing, and the crew decided to eject to safety. A search and rescue team has now been dispatched to the scene to assist the pilots.

“Today around 1:00 PM (Moscow Time) in the Nizhny Novgorod region, an incident occurred with a Su-34 aircraft during a training flight. During landing, there was a failure of the system to deploy one of the landing gears. The crew attempted to resolve the issue in flight but to no avail. By order of the commander, they brought the aircraft to a safe zone and ejected,” the agency reported.

The search and rescue team has proceeded to the site of the crash to evacuate the crew members to the airfield. “According to reports from the scene, both pilots are alive. The flight was conducted without ammunition. The aircraft fell in an uninhabited area. There are no damages on the ground,” the statement said.

Risks of Aviation Training

Other aircraft that have encountered similar situations include the Su-25 attack aircraft, which crashed in the Primorsky region, and the Mi-28 helicopter, which crashed in the Leningrad region. Both incidents also occurred during training flights.

All these cases show that aviation training always carries its risks, but the operational response of the crews and the prompt action of search and rescue services help avoid tragic consequences.
